Effect of iodine supplementation during pregnancy on neonatal thyroid stimulating hormone
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background Thyroid hormone is essential for neurological development, particularly in the developing brain. Iodine is the important constituent of thyroid hormone. Its requirement during pregnancy is increased. Elevated neonatal thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a sensitive indicator of iodine insufficiency in pregnant women. Our previous study in the year 2000 demonstrated that median urine iodine (UI) concentration in pregnant women was 85 μg/ L, a level of which indicates mild iodine deficiency. Since October 2010, Thai national universal iodine supplementation program has been started by prescribing a 150 μgiodine tablet daily to all pregnant women throughout their gestation. We, therefore, aimed to determine the effect of maternal iodine supplementation on neonatal TSH.

The adverse effects of mild-to-moderate iodine deficiency during pregnancy and childhood: a review.
Iodine is required for the production of thyroid hormones, which are essential for normal brain development, and the fetus, newborn, and young child are particularly vulnerable to iodine deficiency. The iodine requirement increases during pregnancy and recommended intakes are in the range of 220-250 microg/day. Monitoring iodine status during pregnancy is a challenge. New recommendations from W...

Iodine is a trace element essential for synthesis of the thyroid hormones, triiodothyronine and thyroxine. These hormones play a vital role in the early growth and development stages of most organs, especially the brain. The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that, after famine, iodine deficiency is the most avoidable cause of cerebral lesions including different degrees of mental ret...
متن کاملParameters of thyroid function throughout and after pregnancy in an iodine-deficient population.
BACKGROUND The thyroid hormone milieu is of crucial importance for the developing fetus. Pregnancy induces physiological changes in thyroid homeostasis that are influenced by the iodine status. However, longitudinal studies addressing thyroid function during pregnancy and after delivery are still lacking in mild-to-moderate iodine-deficient populations. Here we characterize the serum parameters...

Background & Aims: Iodine as an essential element is required for biosynthesis of thyroid hormones as well as for the development of the nervous system of the fetus. Therefore, the consumption of an extra dose of iodine ranging from 150-250 µg/day has been recommended for women planning a pregnancy or at early stage of maternity by world health organizations. This study was designed to evaluate...
